Arrive in the old quarter01
Hanoi

Arrive in the old quarter

A gentle landing and a first walk through the thousand-year-old streets.

Welcome to Hanoi — a thousand years of history folded into a maze of tree-lined boulevards, lantern-lit lanes and steaming street-food corners. Your private guide meets you at the airport and eases you into the rhythm of the city before the long journey north begins.

There is nothing to rush today. The capital is yours to feel rather than tick off — the scent of charcoal and star anise, the river of motorbikes, the old men playing chess on the pavement.

Afternoon

After settling into your boutique hotel in the Old Quarter, set out on a slow orientation walk with your guide through the thirty-six ancient guild streets, each once devoted to a single trade.

  • Hoàn Kiếm Lake — the green heart of the city, wrapped around the red Huc Bridge
  • Ngọc Sơn Temple — a small island shrine reached over the lake
Evening

Sit down to a welcome dinner of northern home cooking — chả cá, bún chả and a glass of fresh bia hơi — while your guide sketches out the days to come.

Into the stone plateau02–03
Hà Giang

Into the stone plateau

Roads in the clouds, H'Mong markets, and two nights as a guest in a family home.

Today you climb into the Đồng Văn Karst Plateau — a UNESCO Global Geopark of grey limestone teeth, terraced valleys and roads that thread the clouds. This is the far north, where the map runs out and the communities who farm these slopes have kept their world intact for centuries.

Over two unhurried days you trade the engine of the city for the slow welcome of the hills, sleeping both nights as a guest in a H'Mong family home.

Morning

A scenic drive north from Hà Giang town onto the plateau, stopping where the views stop you — the Heaven's Gate pass at Quản Bạ and the twin Fairy Mountains below.

Afternoon

Wind on through Yên Minh's pine forests to Đồng Văn, with time among the villages and a first evening with your host family.

  • Lô Lô Chải — named the World's Best Tourism Village 2025, home to the Lô Lô people
  • Sunday hill-tribe market — a swirl of indigo, livestock and corn wine (season permitting)
Evening

Dinner is cooked over the family hearth — sticky rice, free-range chicken and the home-made corn spirit that loosens every conversation.

Life on the frontier04–05
Hà Giang

Life on the frontier

Mã Pí Lèng pass, hidden valleys, and time with the people who farm these slopes.

These two days belong to the frontier itself — the most dramatic road in Vietnam and the quiet valleys folded behind it. You travel slowly, stopping not just for the views but for the people who make their lives among the stone.

Morning

Drive the legendary Mã Pí Lèng pass, carved by hand into a cliff face high above the jade-green Nho Quế river far below — arguably the finest mountain road in the country.

Afternoon

Descend to the river for an optional boat through the Tu Sản canyon, then visit a working village to share tea and time with a farming family.

Evening

Back in Đồng Văn, wander the old quarter's stone houses as the lanterns come on, then dinner and rest.

The terraces of the west06–07
Sa Pa

The terraces of the west

Quieter trails to Tày and Giáy villages, and a private weaving session.

Leaving the eastern plateaus, you cross to the north-west and the famous rice terraces around Sa Pa — but to their quieter side, away from the cable cars and the crowds. Here the mountains are carved into staircases of green and gold, and the trails lead to working Tày, Dao and Giáy villages.

Day 6

A gentle walk down from the town into the Mường Hoa valley, following the terraces to a Tày family home in Tả Van where you stay the night.

Day 7

A private weaving and indigo-dyeing session with local artisans, then a slow walk between hamlets at the pace of the season.

  • Tả Van & Bản Hồ — working villages off the tourist loop
  • Terraced-valley sunrise — mist lifting off the rice at first light

A village morning08
Sa Pa → Hanoi

A village morning

One last misty morning before the slow road back toward the delta.

One last misty morning in the mountains before the journey turns south. There is time for a final walk and a long breakfast with your hosts before the scenic road back down toward the delta.

Morning

A slow farewell walk through the terraces, then the drive back to Hanoi on the expressway, arriving in the late afternoon.

Evening

An evening at leisure in the capital — a quiet dinner, or a wander through the night market if energy allows.

The ancient capital09–10
Ninh Bình

The ancient capital

Hoa Lư, Tràng An and old villages — rowing out at sunrise before the crowds.

South of Hanoi lies Ninh Bình — the 'Halong Bay on land', where the same dramatic limestone rises straight out of flooded rice fields and slow rivers. This was the cradle of the Vietnamese nation, the country's first capital, and it is loveliest at the quiet hours.

Day 9

Explore the ancient capital of Hoa Lư, then cycle the rice paths between villages to your eco-lodge among the karst.

  • Hoa Lư — 10th-century capital, with temples to the founding kings
  • Mua Cave viewpoint — a stairway climb for the classic valley panorama
Day 10

Rise before dawn to row out through the Tràng An or Tam Cốc waterways while the rivers still belong to the herons — the single most magical hour of the journey.

Jade water, small cabins11–12
Hạ Long · Lan Hạ

Jade water, small cabins

An overnight on a small junk in quiet Lan Hạ Bay.

Today, get ready to be amazed. Halong Bay — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — boasts thousands of majestic limestone formations sculpted by nature over millions of years. Reputed as the 'Guilin on the Sea', these emerald islands rise dramatically from crystal-clear turquoise waters to create a breathtaking seascape.

Thanks to its dramatic cliffs, shimmering turquoise waters and over 1,600 limestone islands and islets, Halong is one of the most popular destinations in northern Vietnam — and a cruise into the quieter neighbouring Lan Hạ Bay is the best way to experience its unparalleled beauty, away from the crowds.

Morning

Between 8:00 and 8:30 the cruise shuttle collects you from Hanoi's Old Quarter for a scenic 2.5-hour drive to the coast. On arrival you are welcomed aboard with a refreshing drink, given a short safety briefing by the cruise manager, and sit down to a delicious lunch as the junk slips out among the islands.

Afternoon

Explore the dramatic karst landscape — kayaking, swimming and a sunset that paints the limestone gold. Itineraries vary, but you might visit:

  • Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave) — a magnificent cave of stalactites and stalagmites
  • Titop Island — a short hike to a panoramic view over the bay
  • Cua Van Fishing Village — the traditional life of a floating community
  • Trinh Nu (Virgin) Cave — a secluded cave with unusual rock formations
Evening

Indulge in a hearty dinner prepared onboard, then unwind — board games, squid fishing off the deck, a night film, or the bar. Overnight on the bay.

A long goodbye13
Hanoi

A long goodbye

Back to where it began, a little changed — a final meal and the photographs.

Back to where it began, a little changed. After breakfast on the bay and the drive back to Hanoi, there is time for a final meal, the last of the photographs, and the slow goodbye — before your guide sees you to the airport for your onward flight.

Morning

An optional sunrise Tai Chi on deck, breakfast, and a last cruise among the islands before disembarking and returning to Hanoi.

Afternoon

Time to rest, shop for the gifts you spotted along the way, or simply sit with a coffee and the memory of the north — before your transfer to the airport.

What to pack

Light, breathable layers, a warm mid-layer for the highlands, broken-in walking shoes and a light rain shell. We send a tailored packing list for your exact route and dates.

Local customs

Dress modestly at temples and family homes (shoulders and knees covered), remove your shoes when you see a pile at the door, and bargain gently and with a smile at the markets.
